A philosophical debate between Socialism and Capitalism.

Part 1.

Before starting a debate, it is mandatory to define Capitalism and Socialism. I wouldn't dive deep into the intricacies of these philosophies, but I shall give you a brief introduction of these two widely acknowledged theories.

Capitalism: It is an economic and political system in which private ownership is of paramount importance. It believes in deregulated market. State has no role to play in the market. Market will decide the cost of a commodity by adhering to demand and supply rule. In this system, everyone can earn as much as he can. In this system, profit is preferred over morality.

SocialismIt is an economic and political system advocating collective or government ownership and administration of the means of production and distribution of goods. If capitalism is thesis then socialism is its antithesis. Both are poles apart, completely different from each other. For a socialist, state or a group must control everything. And he/she detests private ownership. The extreme form of socialism is Communism.

Now let's start the debate!

Ivan and George are fast friends. They meet everyday. Their love for each other is beyond expression. To cite the example of their love for each other, both have sacrificed something for each other. But they support two different ideologies: Socialism and Capitalism. Ivan believes in the former while George supports the latter. On the other hand, George loved science.

They met, as usual, on 14 March, the date on which founder of Communism, Karl Marx, died in 1883.

George: On this very day, world's famous storyteller died.

Ivan, after listening to this, replied sarcastically.

Ivan: Oh, yes. Stephen hawking was a liar.

George replied in anger: I am talking about Karl Marx!

Ivan: Oh! Sorry. I thought you were talking about real liar.

George was furious. He would have killed him if he was not his friend.

George: Are you serious? Hawking was the best mind of century.

Ivan was enjoying the conversation. He liked to play with his Choleric friend. He was witty, undoubtedly.

Ivan: Okay. Tell me how many noble prizes best-mind-of-the-century won?

George: None.

Ivan: Then what is the difference between me and Hawking?  Am I the best mind of the century too?Because, like him, I haven't received noble prize.

George was beginning to understand his rhetorics. He decided to reply him in the same fashion.

George: If noble prize is benchmark of success,  what about Karl Marx? How many he won?

Now the conversation was getting serious. Although Ivan wasn't angry yet, he wasn't funny either.

Ivan: I think you don't know his year of death. First noble prize was given in 1901, and he died in 1883. Even if he was alive, he wouldn't have got one. Because he was against the very people who bestow this prestigious award.

George: He wasn't against these people. They have nothing to do with the his ideas and ideology. But he  was against the free market, the base on which the building of capitalism stands.

Ivan: You think he was wrong? Free markets, for him and for every Marxists, are  the main tools to create the idol of poverty.

George: Are you out of your mind? Don't you know nothing?  Free markets eradicate poverty. It is the state controlled markets which invariably give birth to poverty. Haven't you heard about the story of Ghana. State bought cocoa from the farmers at very low price. And then sold that to a much higher price to other countries. Farmers lost the desire of growing the cocoa again. This action of government put the people of Ghana in a permanent state of poverty. Had there been free markets, people of Gahana would have sold their productions at much higher rates,

Ivan was enjoying his cigarette at that time. And suddenly he spoke while the smoke was coming out of his mouth.

Ivan: If state control is that bad, why China has lifted millions of its people out of poverty? Don't confuse corruption with state controlled economy. If you put state out of market, there would be few people owning everything. You can observe this by looking at capitalists countries. World's richest one percent owns forty four percent of wealth.

George was stunned. He was completely flabbergasted. He didn't know what to say now.

George: You are portraying the wrong image of capitalism for your own benefits. Capitalism is all about competition, self intrest, and accumulation. Why is it wrong to compete? Why is it immoral to care for one's own intrests? Why is it a crime to accumulate? If Jeff Bezos - CEO of Amazon - is world's richest person, why are you upset? If Steve Jobs cared for his own intrest first, why are you bothered by it. If Bill Gates is looking for accumulation, why are you worried. Answer me! I think you detest competion, loathe self intrest, and hate accumulation because you are of afraid of them. All these things are natural. You are going against the nature, and you will lose like Soviet Union.

Ivan: Before moving forward, let me clear one thing: Socialism is not about Soviet Union. If the latter had failed, this doesn't mean that the former has been defeated. Secondly, don't confuse competition with expliotation. We don't hate competition, but we abhor expliotation. What you are calling accumulation is hoarding for us. Self- intrest is also good. But when the former trample other people, we'll kill it.  Capitalists are justifying their exploitations in the name of these said theories.
